    Eighty Egyptian manufacturers and importers attended a USDEC seminar in Cairo on “Discovering U.S. Permeate: Advantages and Opportunities in Bakery Applications” in September. Of the attendees, 75 percent represented the bakery/confectionery industries, 17 percent ingredient imports/ distributors and eight percent food science/academics. Speakers from USDEC, the U.S. Wheat Marketing Institute and Egyptian Food Technology Research Institute highlighted permeate’s functional and sensory benefits in both Western and Egyptian applications.

  • Japanese Conference Highlights Research on U.S. Dairy Role in Healthy Aging

    USDEC sponsored a luncheon symposium at the Japan Society of Nutrition and Food Science annual conference on June 1, 2014 in Hokkaido, Japan. Dr. Shuiichi Machida, senior associate professor of Juntendo University, gave a well-received presentation on the role of U.S. whey protein for healthy aging and reducing the risk of sarcopenia. This is especially relevant now in Japan where the aged 65-plus population is approaching one in four. Machida also distinguished quality differences in protein sources for stimulating muscle synthesis.

  • Interest in U.S. Dairy Products Grows at Gulfood Show

    Six member companies exhibited in the USDEC booth at the 2014 Gulfood Show in Dubai in February. U.S. cheeses, whey products, milk powders and butter were showcased to buyers and end-users from the Middle East/North Africa region. Suppliers also participated in the Emirates Salon Culinaire, a competition, during which professional chefs, pastry chefs, cooks and bakers competed in 25 classes that USDEC sponsored to familiarize young chefs with U.S. cheese.

  • Japanese Experts Advocate Whey Protein Innovation Advantages

    Nearly 170 food and beverage industry professionals as well as 21 media attended a USDEC trade seminar in Tokyo in December 2013. The three speakers - all influential local experts in their fields - included a sports nutrition professor, registered dietitian/food technologist, and business consultant on global nutrition/food and beverage trends. Staff also conveyed the advantages of sourcing dairy from the United States at the well-received seminar and advocated the advantages of U.S. whey protein for healthy aging within a Japanese context.
